One of the most surreal experiences I’ve had at Dandelion was listening to a conversation between one of my ethnically Tibetan students and one of my Han (the main ethnic group in China) students. She repeatedly asked Cindy (my Tibetan student) if she was from Tibet even though Cindy in return kept replying she was from Sichuan. She also asked Cindy if she knew how to ride horses and shoot arrows. Again, Cindy tried to explain that she grew up in an urban city and not in some hut in the wilderness. This reminded me of how some people in the US ask Asian Americans if they know kung fu or taichi just because they're Asian. It reminded me of how a lot of people in the US and China ask why my Chinese is so bad, even though I was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida (read: not China).
